Your Day-to-Day Guide: Easy WordPress Tasks You Can Handle Yourself

Managing Content: The Editor is Your Friend

The core of your website is its content, and making simple changes is easy.

  • To Create a New Page or Blog Post: Go to Pages > Add New or Posts > Add New. The editor uses “Blocks”—just click the ‘+’ icon to add text, images, or headings.
  • To Change Text: Simply click on the text block you want to edit and start typing, just like in a document editor.
  • To Change Fonts or Colors: For simple, site-wide changes, go to Appearance > Customize. This tool lets you adjust your theme’s default fonts, headers, and primary colors instantly. (Note: For complex, custom design changes, that’s where I step in!)

E-commerce: Handling Orders and Products

If your site is an online store (using WooCommerce), these are critical tasks:

  • To Add a New Product: Go to Products > Add New. Here you will set the product name, description, price, and upload the product image.
  • To View or Update an Order: Go to WooCommerce > Orders. Click on any order to see customer details, change its status (e.g., from Processing to Completed), or mark it as shipped.

Community Management: Comments

Staying on top of comments keeps your community healthy.

  • To Approve or Reply to Comments: Go to Comments. You can quickly review, approve, spam-mark, or reply directly to user comments from this screen. Aim to check this daily!

The Developer’s Essential Maintenance Checklist

While day-to-day tasks are simple, continuous maintenance is non-negotiable for site health.

  • Weekly Check-in: Log in weekly to Dashboard > Updates and apply all pending updates (WordPress core, Themes, and Plugins). This is your primary defense against security threats.
  • Keep it Clean: Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins and delete any unused or inactive plugins. They are unnecessary code cluttering your site.

When Is It Time to Contact Me?

You are doing great handling the day-to-day operations! However, certain issues require professional intervention. Please contact me immediately if:

  • The Site Breaks After an Update: If you see a white screen or error message, the code has conflicted, and I need to resolve it quickly.
  • You Need a Major Design/Functional Change: If you want to integrate a complex system, add a new large feature, or overhaul a page layout.
  • The Site Becomes Extremely Slow: If basic maintenance isn’t helping, we need to perform deep code and database optimization to restore speed.
